If you’re heading to Los Cabos, a region on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, you might be wondering which town to visit – San Jose del Cabo or Cabo San Lucas? Although I slightly preferred one town over the other, I suggest visiting both – read on for all the details…

San Jose del Cabo, Mexico
Los Cabos International Airport, located in San Jose del Cabo, is where you’ll fly into if visiting this area. If you’re continuing on to Cabo San Lucas, it’s about a 35-minute drive. If you’re staying in San Jose, you’ll already there!

Shopping in San Jose del Cabo
Head to San Jose’s historic town square, Plaza Mijares. Here, you’ll find a 17th century Mission style church and architecture. Surrounding the square are blocks of small, independent shops. Some of my favorites include El Armario Art & Coffee for local art, as well as Taller Maya for handmade piece by local artisans. If you enjoy natural wine, definitely check out Clyde, a natural wine shop, too!

Where to Eat
There’s no shortage of restaurants, bars and coffee shops in San Jose del Cabo. I loved La Lupita for tacos and margaritas (top photo) and Cafeteria Cochimi (bottom photo) for pastries and coffee.
Other can’t-miss restaurants in town are Jardin Secreto Cabo and AGAVE Kitchen. Just outside of town you’ll find Flora Farms and ACRE.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
The town of Cabo San Lucas is about 35-minutes north of San Jose del Cabo. Here, you’ll find the stereotypical Cabo experience: the famous rock formations, lively restaurants, spring breakers, and cruise ships docked in Cabo San Lucas Bay. Although I preferred the quieter atmosphere in San Jose del Cabo, there are a few places I definitely recommend seeing in Cabo San Lucas as well!
Shopping in Cabo San Lucas
Definitely avoid the touristy marina area and check out off-the-beaten-path shops instead. In Cabo San Lucas, don’t miss La Coyota for ceramics, jewelry, home goods and more. Outside of town, the Shoppes at Palmilla is an upscale shopping center with local shops and restaurants.

Best Restaurants in Cabo San Lucas
Cabo San Lucas has some amazing places to eat. I loved festive Mi Casa (top photo) for lunch or dinner, and The Office (bottom photo), a lively bar and restaurant on the beach, for just about any time of day! Another standout for lunch or dinner is Mother Flower for homemade Mexican and seafood dishes.
San Jose del Cabo vs Cabo San Lucas: The Final Verdict
I loved my day in Cabo San Lucas: My itinerary included a food tour, drinks at The Office, and a sunset sail to see the area’s famous rock formations. But as much fun as that was, San Jose del Cabo is definitely more my speed. It’s smaller and historic, with local shops, imaginative restaurants and a less touristy atmosphere.
However, if you prefer more nightlife, lively dining and a stunning ocean view, Cabo San Lucas might be a better fit for you. Either way, since the two towns are only 35 minutes apart, it’s easy to pick and choose the best aspects of both for your trip to Los Cabos.
