Hotel Goldener Hirsch is one of the oldest hotels in the world and my favorite place to stay in Salzburg. In this post I cover everything you need to know to decide if this hotel is right for you, including photos of the interior and guest rooms, amenities, location and more.
About Hotel Goldener Hirsch
This property dates back to medieval times! The building itself was constructed in 1407 and was converted into a hotel by the late 16th century. It has been renovated several times, including in 1940 and 2019, so expect to find modern amenities mixed in with traditional Austrian decor.
Over the years, guests have included King Charles of England, Morgan Freeman, Julie Andrews and Elizabeth Taylor.
Today, Hotel Goldener Hirsch offers 70 rooms and suites, on-site dining, and an ideal location in Salzburg’s historical Old Town.
Location
The hotel is located on the most famous street in Salzburg: the Getreidegasse, a pedestrian-only walkway lined with colorful, 15th century buildings. Overhead, decorative wrought iron guild signs hang above shops, restaurants and hotels. Hotel Goldener Hirsch is located at #37 Getreidegasse. Another notable address along the walkway is Mozart’s birthplace and childhood home, located at #9 Getreidegasse.
The hotel is also within walking distance of Mirabell Palace and gardens, a 12-minute walk; Fortress Hohensalzburg, a 15-minute walk; and is only steps from Salzburg’s Christmas market, if you’re visiting over the holidays.
Accommodations at the Goldener Hirsch
My room at Hotel Goldener Hirsch was warm, inviting and comfortable. I loved the traditional Austrian fabrics, furniture and antiques mixed in with modern amenities. These included a rainfall shower, automatic lighting, and luxury bath and body products. The hotel also offers a turndown service, and since we were usually gone in the evening to dinner or at the Christmas market it was so fun to return to a turned-down bed, slippers and little treats like chocolates.
Restaurants at the Hotel Goldener Hirsch
The hotel offers several dining options: breakfast in the Rosa Salon, including an extensive buffet in addition to made-to-order dishes (EUR 30-49 per person.) If you’re feeling extra fancy, there’s an afternoon tea, and 24-hour in-room dining service.
There are also two restaurants adjacent to the hotel for lunch and dinner: the Restaurant Goldener Hirsch, for fine dining, and Restaurant Herzl, a more casual option. Finally, Bar Goldener Hirsch, pictured above, is modeled after an Austrian hunting lodge.
