Fall at the Queen’s Hamlet in Versailles 🍂 The hamlet will look like this in just a few weeks!

Montalcino, Italy is one of my favorite hilltop to

Montalcino, Italy is one of my favorite hilltop towns in Tuscany’s Val d’Orcia region. Here, you’ll find vineyards producing Brunello di Montalcino 🍷 as well as a 14th-century fortress, restaurants, wine bars and gorgeous views of Tuscany.

Montalcino is only 45 minutes from Siena on Via Cassia/SS2, a two-lane highway in Tuscany that follows an ancient road that stretched from Florence to Rome. The town is close to Pienza and Montepulciano, if you want to group all three towns together.

Montalcino is a small town: You can see the fortress and highlights in about an hour. However, if you want to visit nearby wineries, or visit a restaurants or wine bar in Montalcino, you can easily spend longer.

Surrounding Montalcino are 240+ wineries, so it’s a great place to visit if you enjoy visiting wineries and wine tasting 🍇 The town is known for two kinds of wine: Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino.

Trastevere is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Rome 🇮🇹 Here, you’ll find cobbled, winding streets lined with ancient buildings.

Whether you’re planning to stay in Trastevere or just visiting for a few hours, there’s so much to do and see in this neighborhood. Here are a few of the best things to do in Trastevere:

// Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere
The first place you’ll want to visit is the main public square, Piazza di Santa Maria.

Lining the piazza are ancient buildings, including the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere – more on that below. Next to the basilica is the Palazzo San Callisto, a Baroque palace, renovated in the 16th century. You’ll also find restaurants along the piazza, typically with outdoor seating – a great place to grab lunch.

After you explore the Piazza, step inside the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. This is a truly spectacular cathedral and one of the oldest churches in Rome. Once inside, enjoy the 12th and 13th century mosaics - see photo 3!

I love Roma Sparita – don’t miss it! Their signature dish is cacio e pepe - check out photo 5. This restaurant is very popular; reservations are recommended.

Otello (last photo) is warm, rustic and inviting – a great place to enjoy a hearty meal after a long day of sightseeing. I don’t think they accept reservations, the wait can be long for dinner but that is typical of most restaurants in Trastevere.

One day in Tuscany: About 50 minutes south of Sien

One day in Tuscany: About 50 minutes south of Siena, Montepulciano sits on the edge of Tuscany’s scenic Val d’Orcia region.

Getting there: This medieval hilltop town does not have a train station. You’ll need to rent a car, join a tour or hire a driver to get there. We rented a car, and grouped Montepulciano with nearby Pienza and Montalcino.

Don’t miss: Highlights include wineries serving Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, two wines produced in the area. I also loved Caffè Poliziano, the first photo in the carousel, for lunch. In the main square, see Santa Maria Assunta, the city’s church, built between 1586-1680, and the Griffins and Lions Well, with its Medici coat of arms between the lions of Florence.
