Castelmuzio, Italy is a tiny hilltop village in Tuscany’s scenic Val d’Orcia region. This area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is known for its rolling hills, cypress-lined roads, and medieval villages. I loved visiting Castelmuzio, Italy; read on for everything you need to know to plan your visit!
About Castelmuzio, Italy
Castelmuzio dates back to the Etruscan era, with mentions of the village dating back to the 11th century. Its strategic location on an ancient road that connected nearby Siena to Val d’Orcia made it a significant outpost during medieval times. Today, Castelmuzio is a quiet, hidden gem; perfect for travelers looking to glimpse a non-touristy side of Tuscany.
How to Get There
If you’re traveling from out of the country, you’ll want to fly into Rome or Florence to visit Castelmuzio and the Val d’Orcia region. You WILL want to rent a car, as the area is rural and best explored with your own transportation. From Rome, Castelmuzio is a two hour, twenty-minute drive. You’ll spend most of the drive on Italy’s A1/E35, a major highway in Europe that connects Rome and Florence.
From Florence (see my guide to Florence here), Castelmuzio is a one hour, twenty-eight minute drive. Similar to the driving directions from Rome, you’ll spend the majority of the drive on the A1/E35.
What to Expect in Castelmuzio
Tuscany is dotted with small, medieval hilltop villages like Castelmuzio. Many of these towns have several hotels and one or two restaurants; they’re quiet and peaceful. In fact, the first time we visited Castelmuzio, we didn’t see another soul as we walked through the village at sunset! On our next visit, we dined in a small restaurant in the village, where we were the only patrons who spoke English. So, if you’re looking to experience an authentic slice of Tuscany, Castelmuzio is the perfect place.
Things to do in Castelmuzio, Italy
Castelmuzio is only 12 minutes from Pienza, which makes it a great place to visit or stay as you explore the Val d’Orcia region, a UNESCO World Heritage site. You’re also within an hour of Siena, Montepulciano and Montalcino. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of nearby towns and things to do:
- Pienza is a 12-minute drive (see my guide to Pienza here)
- Chapel Vitaleta, a famous photo spot in Tuscany, is a 22 minute drive
- Bagno Vignoni Thermal Baths are a 27 minute drive
- Montepulciano is a 28 minute drive (see my guide to Montepulciano here)
- Montalcino is a 30 minute drive (see my guide to Montalcino here)

Castelmuzio, Italy Restaurants
There are several restaurants in and around Castelmuzio. I had a wonderful birthday dinner at Locanda di Casalmustia. Located right in the city center, it’s small and local; perfect for a rustic Tuscan meal. For a gourmet option, check out La Cucina della Moscadella, less than a 2-minute drive from Castelmuzio. We enjoyed dinner here one evening as we stayed in the adjoining hotel (more on that below)
As with all of Italy, check restaurant hours to ensure the restaurant of your choice is open when you plan to visit. Or, ask your hotel if they can make reservations for you, especially if you don’t speak Italian.
Castelmuzio, Italy Hotels
If you want to stay in the medieval heart of Castelmuzio, consider Le Casine di Castello. This gorgeous townhouse can be rented in full for six guests. Or, rent one half or the other to sleep two or four guests.
If you prefer a hotel setting, I loved La Moscadella, a 2-minute drive or ten minute walk from Castelmuzio. This is where I stayed and I can’t recommend it enough. See my full review and photos here.
