La Moscadella is a throughtfully restored, boutique hotel in Italy’s scenic Val d’Orcia region. In this post I’m sharing everything I wish I knew before I visited: detailed travel information, guest room photos, things to do in the area, and more.
All About La Moscadella
The property is part of a group of four properties called The Isabella Experience, created and curated by Isabella Moricciani. The properties each have their own personalities, with La Moscadella offering luxury accommodations in a beautiful 16th-century former monastery. One of my favorite things about the renovations and design is that you can still feel the character of the original Tuscan structure and its heritage.
About Castelmuzio, Italy
The property is located just outside Castelmuzio, a tiny, quiet, medieval hilltop village in Tuscany. Castelmuzio is within walking distance of La Moscadella, and you can easily walk to the village to explore, catch a sunset over Val d’Orcia, or enjoy a meal at the local restaurant, Locanda di Casalmustia. You can see my full guide to Castelmuzio here.
How to Get There
Castelmuzio – and La Moscadella – are one hour 25 minutes by car from Florence. If you’re coming from Siena, it’s about a 50 minute drive. There’s not a train station close to La Moscadella, so you’ll need a rental car or private transfer.
La Moscadella can help arrange airport pickups and private transfers, or guide you to the best rental car options. If possible, I recommend renting a car so you can explore the area to its fullest – and at your own pace.
Things to do in the area
There’s a lot to see and do in Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site recognized for its preservation of Renaissance aesthetic and character. These traits are on full display at Tornesi, a family-owned winery outside Montalcino, specializing in Brunello. The winery is a 30-minute scenic drive from La Moscadella, and we enjoyed a Tuscan lunch and wine tasting at Tornesi. Afterward, we explored Montalcino and nearby Pienza and Montepulciano.
Although we didn’t visit Siena on this trip, it’s a little under an hour away. It would be a perfect day trip from La Moscadella.
Other popular activities include Tuscan hot springs and thermal baths; spas and wellness; countless wineries; cultural and agricultural sites; and more.
Amenities & Accommodations
The guest rooms at La Moscadella feel more like you’re staying at a friend’s luxurious villa than a hotel. They are incredibly comfortable and thoughtfully designed. Many of the pieces are authentic Tuscan and Etruscan art and decor; some from Isabella’s private collection.
There was an option for weekly laundry service; a beautiful walk-in closet; and spa amenities in each room, including robes, slippers, luxury soap and skincare.
Amenities at the hotel include a gourmet, on-site restaurant – more on that below. There’s also a swimming pool, weekly laundry services, and a variety of classes, such as Tuscan cooking and olive oil classes. We were able to join the olive oil class, which was so fun and informative.
We also appreciated personalized assistance with planning each day’s activities. Each morning we’d visit with Isabella or her staff and they’d help us develop an itinerary for the day. Whether it was wine tasting or sightseeing, La Moscadella took care of all details and reservations.
La Moscadella Restaurant
La Moscadella has an on-site, farm-to-table gourmet restaurant serving Tuscan dishes. The restaurant is open for dinner service (7-10:30 p.m.) every day except Wednesday and Thursday. Hopefully you have an opportunity to visit the restaurant during your stay. It’s also nice to not have to leave the property for dinner after a full day of exploring Val d’Orcia!
We enjoyed made-to-order coffee and a full breakfast buffet at La Moscadella, including fruit, pastries, and a selection of meat and cheese.
